“Share Links” - P2P Revolution or Small Metamorphic P2P Evolution?

There was an interesting posting by DCInteractive which discusses the movement on file-hosting and comparing it to popular file-sharing medium BitTorrent. Is it all hype or is it really a revolution? Drew Wilson provides a personal commentary on the subject.

To provide an extremely brief summary of my experience, I’ve been writing news for about 3 years, but my file-sharing experience dates back to the Napster era. So suffice to say, I’ve developed some knowledge on this area.

While there is no real universal term for what has been described in the commentary since some simply refer to these sites as upload sites among other things, I’ll use the term “Share links” merely for consistency.

Another DRM Music Store Scheme Bites the Dust - Wal-Mart Shuts Off DRMed Music

Sometimes, it’s just plain difficult to be an honest customer these days. This was proven again with the shut down of Wal-Mart’s DRM music server.

There is a report on BoingBoing. Basically, Wal-Mart started their music service with a DRM-based scheme. About a year ago now, Wal-Mart became a part of an exodus of music stores fleeing DRM amid worries that other services that already dropped DRM would simply outperform them.

FavTape is a great replacement for those looking to fill the Muxtape void.
It was just over a month ago that online mixtape service Muxtape shut down in order to placate threats by the RIAA.

EFF: ‘Limewire Not Liable for Copyright Infringement, Users Are’

Copyright Law Should Not Chill Development of Emerging Technologies
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and a coalition of groups representing both consumers and industry filed an amicus brief today in Arista v. LimeWire, the first major lawsuit since MGM v. Grokster against a creator of P2P file-sharing software, warning that the case has profound implications for the development of new software and hardware.
In Arista v. Lime Wire, the recording industry plaintiffs seek to hold LimeWire liable for acts of copyright infringement by users of its software.

Congress Passes PRO-IP Act, but Bush May Veto

Concerned about separation of powers and "legislative intrusion into the internal structure and composition of the President’s Administration."
Over the weekend Congress passed the controversial Prioritizing Resources and Organization for Intellectual Property Act, or PRO-IP Act, which was formally known as the Enforcement of Intellectual Property Rights Act. If you recall, the legislation had originally contained a provision allowing the Dept of Justice to sue file-sharers in civil as well as criminal court. It was a job the DoJ did not want.
"We strongly oppose Title I of the bill, which not only authorizes the Attorney General to pursue civil remedies for copyright infringement, but to secure ‘restitution’ damages and remit them to the private owners of infringed copyrights,"wrote the DoJ to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
